About two to three times a month, I have the thought, “Huntsville really needs an REI.” Well, someone must’ve heard my thoughts, because a new REI Co-op store is coming to the MidCity Huntsville development. It will be the outdoor store’s first post in the state of Alabama.
According to a press release from the company, the new 20,000 square foot store will open in fall 2019. The new store will have direct access to MidCity Park, a 40-acre public space with a trail system, lakeside dock and outdoor amphitheater.
REI is a member-owned co-op where anyone can shop. Members pay $20 for a lifetime membership and share in the company’s profits through an annual dividend.
Here’s something cool I didn’t realize about REI: reportedly about 70% of the company’s profits go back to the outdoor community. They work with non-profits to help protect the “wild places” and develop outdoor recreation areas.
